Kankakee Sands, a Nature Preserve property in northwest Indiana, is a prairie-savanna restoration that is home to the state’s only herd of bison. In addition to the recently re-introduced bison, Kankakee is also home to an array of grassland birds like the Dickcissel, Blue Grosbeak, Northern Bobwhite, and lots of sparrows (Lark, Grasshopper, and Henslow’s, to name a few). Kankakee is also a good place for raptors and shorebirds.
This tour will depart Bloomington at 7:00 a.m. on May 23rd, but we can pick up others along the way or meet people at Kankakee. We will drive the auto tour route on the preserve, search for the bison, and do some short hikes to look for birds. The tour will also visit Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area and Pine Creek Gamebird Area, allowing us to view an even greater variety of birds in the area.
The price of $225/person includes accommodations and breakfast at the Baymont Inn & Suites in nearby Rensselaer. If you sign up with a roommate, the reduced rate for a shared room is $180/person. Participants are encouraged to pack a lunch for mid-day Wednesday. Meals at restaurants on Wednesday evening and Thursday noon are not included in the price.
