A first-time tour offering that I’ve been contemplating for quite awhile! On this tour, we will stay overnight on Saturday, February 10 at Goose Pond Cabins, located on the north end of Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area. Staying overnight will allow us to do two things: spend more time looking for owls and watch the Sandhill cranes at both dusk and dawn.
We will depart Bloomington at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, arriving in Linton about 2:00 for those that might want to meet us there. We will spend the afternoon birding, looking for raptors and whooping cranes and other birds. As the sun begins to go down, we will get ourselves in position to watch the breathtaking short-eared owls as they start their evening hunt. Hopefully the Sandhill cranes will be calling as they fly back to the wetlands to roost for the night. We will break for dinner in Linton after dark, then spend a little time hooting for Barred Owls near the cabins.
There are two cabins for our group to use at Goose Pond Cabins. All rooms have two beds. If you are willing to share a room with a spouse, friend, or other tour participant of the same gender, your rate is $125. If you would prefer to have your own room, the price will be $175. Only two spots are possible at the $175 rate.
In the morning, I will provide breakfast in the cabins before we head out for sunrise (~7:45 a.m.) birding. After enjoying the early morning flight of cranes and geese, we will spend a couple of hours looking for songbirds and checking in on eagle nests before packing up for the return trip to Bloomington.
Payment is due at registration. Cancellation is possible up until one week beforehand with a full refund. In the case of terrible weather, I reserve the right to cancel the trip and will provide full refunds for everyone. The trip is limited to 5 participants. Once filled, I will keep a waitlist.
I’m guessing this tour will be in high demand, so make your reservation soon! Goose Pond truly is a fabulous place.
